Summary

A formal writing system used by ancient Egyptians, consisting of pictorial symbols that represent sounds, objects, or ideas. The word “hieroglyphic” comes from the Greek hieros (sacred) and glyphein (to carve), reflecting their use in religious and monumental inscriptions.

Mainly used for religious texts, inscriptions on temples and tombs, and official records. They were often written in horizontal rows and read from left to right or right to left, depending on the direction of the figures.
