Summary

A tall, four-sided, narrow tapering monument that ends in a [[pyramid]]-like shape at the top. Originally constructed by the ancient Egyptians, obelisks were typically made of polished stone and used as solar markers or religious symbols, often dedicated to the sun god Ra.

Later, Roman emperors adopted the obelisk design and transported Egyptian obelisks to Rome to symbolize imperial power and victory. Today, you can find obelisks around the world, including Central Park in New York City and London’s Cleopatra’s Needle.
